In our next webinar we will look at the effect that the new government will have on local government funding. The new prime minister – Andy Burnham – has a very different agenda for devolution, with financial consequences for existing local authorities. We look ahead to the Budget (28 October 2026), next year’s spending review, and the statements issued by the government over the Summer. We will also pick the latest announcements (including the new tourist tax).
At the same time, the business of local government continues. Although the settlement later this year will be much simpler than last year’s, there will be some technical changes (2026 Revaluation adjustment to BR baselines). We are also aware that increasing numbers of authorities are considering applications for Extraordinary Financial Support (EFS).
The latest data from the 2025-26 financial accounts is now available (exclusively from Dan Bates). Dan will provide an insight into the latest accounts and the financial health of local government.
And of course, we will provide an update on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). In a change to the planned programme, we will now look at what happens now the LGR proposals have been cancelled or postponed. As a result of this bombshell decision, many authorities are now having to return to their financial plans for 2027-28 and 2028-29.
