We will be producing a suite of data to help authorities understand financial resilience (and risk). It will allow authorities to see changes in the finances of councils across the sector, to understand trends in key financial metrics, and to see how they fit into the overall financial changes.
Key elements of our financial resilience dataset will be:
- Analysis of the latest local authority accounts – this will include data for 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18. We will update as local authorities release their latest financial accounts.
- A financial risk index that identifies the most important financial risks, including exposure to grant cuts, incentive-based funding, and to demand-led spending pressures. Updated to take into account potential changes in 2020-21.
- Short-term risk analysis, including trends for usable reserves, overspending and council tax increases.
